Nuclear Protection Products AS was established 1998 based on an idea from the norwegian Institute for Energy Technology (Institutt for Energiteknikk) to develop and mass produce more cost efficient, safe and secure containers for radioactive waste. Norway had – and still has – an unresolved challenge with respect to handling spent nuclear fuel from its two research rectors in Halden and Kjeller. The aim is furthermore to become a key supplier of radioactive material packaging on the global arena. There is still a lack of standardization and independent vendors in the market. NPP has an important role to play.
Since the inception, NPP has performed extensive R&D activities to verify concepts, technology and solutions, and several patents have been granted. NPP has collaborated with norwegian as well as US research institutes.
The work has been financed by private investors.
